The group of "Simulations & Theory of Complex Systems" focusses on studying complex systems such as biological membranes and bioinspired nano materials. Our main goals are to (i) elucidate the mechanisms and free energy landscape of protein-mediated membrane processes such as, for example, biological membrane fusion or fission, and (ii) to explore and exploit the applications of biomaterials within material science. To this aim, we apply and develop state-of-the-art molecular dynamics simulation techniques and free energy calculation methods which we (adhoc) combine with statistical methods or analytical modeling.
